And if you want F1 to win Best Picture quickly, you better buckle up to watch all 10 movies.
After the rule changes were announced last April, one social media user criticized: “Yay, Movie Twitter. The Oscars just required voters to actually see all the nominees in the category before voting.”
However, while Academy members must watch Oscar nominees through the group’s screening portal, they also have the option to check a box claiming they saw the film through other means (festivals, premieres, theaters).
In other words, there are certainly sinners.
One Academy member interviewed by the Los Angeles Times admitted to falsifying the list. In an email posted to Deadline, another anonymous filmmaker revealed he was completely abstaining, writing: “I haven’t seen half of the nominated films, nor do I want to. My time is too precious to spend watching a film I know I’ll never vote for (much less sit through to the end).”
But not all Oscar-related rules are so easily broken. Before you open the envelope, we reveal all the surprising guidelines set for the 98th Academy Awards.
