Pathum nissanka became the fastest Sri Lankan batsman to reach a 2,000 T20 run as the opener scored a six-wicket victory in Bangladesh in a key Asian Cup match on Saturday.

Nissanka fully manipulated the line and length of the Bangladeshi bowler to score 50 balls from 34 balls, and Sri Lanka was blown away 140-4 with a strong start to its campaign.

Bangladesh handed Hong Kong seven wicket drabs in the first group B game to recover from a horror start and scored 139-5 after losing both openers to fast Bowrane Wanz Shala and Dushmantha Chamela’s consecutive wickets Maydon to new balls.

Nissanka batted, reaching a 2,000-run landmark when he completed a half-century in his 68th T20 innings, winning six and six. Kusal Perera has a previous Sri Lankan record, achieving the feat in 76 innings.

Nissanka fell shortly after entertaining 95 runs of fun with Kamil Mishara (not 46), but sealed the game when Shorifan Islam grabbed an epic two-handed catch with deep rear square legs.

Bangladesh had to pay a large price to drop Mishra to one when Mahedi Hassan couldn’t hold a two-handed catch near the 30-meter circle in the wide mid-on. Perera and Dasun Shanaka also died quickly in search of big shots, but Mishara’s undefeated knock on 32 balls allowed Sri Lanka to finish the game with ease of over five overs.

Previously after being put in the bat, Shamim Hossein (42) and Jaker Ali (41) helped Bangladesh recover from a disastrous start when they joined in the second half of the innings in an unbroken stand of 61 balls and 86 runs.

Wanindu Hasaranga made an impactful return to international cricket with numbers 2-25 after missing out on his final series against Zimbabwe due to a hamstring injury. The leg spinner should have had Jaker’s wicket in an eventful two seconds, but after passing through the batter’s defense, he only saw his sharp googlee grazing off the stump, but both bails remained on the stump.

Hasalanga’s sharp spinning birth and twin strike came when Bangladesh surged to 53-5 on the 10th, and stepped in front of the wicket as Captain Litton Das (28) attempted a reverse sweep with Hasalanga.

Chameera bowled an impressive yoker at Death Overs and finished with the same numbers 4-1-17-1 with Thushara. Shahmim hit only off-collar Sri Lankan bowler Mashesha Patilala (0-42) in Bangladesh’s only defensive innings.
