Spike Lee on how he defines his film legacy after ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ (Exclusive)
Spike Lee has always tried to do the right thing through filmmaking.
The Jungle Fever director cited his pioneering filmography as evidence of his professional success when he accepted the Career Achievement Award at the Critics Choice Association’s 8th Annual Black Film and Television Festival in Los Angeles.
“Look at the work,” he told E! News in an exclusive interview at the event on December 9th. “Look at the joints. Look at Spike Lee’s joints.”
And while the 68-year-old accepted the prestigious honor at the event, he noted that audience loyalty has been the driving force behind his longevity in Hollywood.
“Ever since ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ in 1986, my community has been coming to see my films and applauding me,” he explained. “Next year will be our 40th anniversary.”
Spike’s success has spanned decades, most recently with the release of this year’s crime thriller The Heist 2, starring Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright and A$AP Rocky, but the Oscar winner still has plenty of stories to tell on screen.
