JERUSALEM (AP) — The attackers fired fire at a bus stop at a busy intersection in North Jerusalem on Monday, killing five people and wounding 12 more people, according to Israeli police and emergency rescue services.
Police said the attackers shot people waiting at the bus stop, but Israeli media reported that the attackers also got on the busy bus and fired shots inside.
Police said security guards and civilians on the scene shot and killed the attacker.
The shooting took place at a large intersection at the northern entrance of Jerusalem, on a road leading to a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem.
Footage of the attack showed dozens of people fled from the bus stop at a busy intersection during morning rush hour. Paramedics responding to the scene said the area was confusing and covered in broken glass.
Hundreds of security forces arrived at the scene to search for additional attackers and explosives that could have been planted in the area. Israeli forces said they are surrounding a Palestinian village on the outskirts of Ramala, the nearby West Bank city, to strengthen their defenses in response to attacks.
Hamas welcomed the attack without asserting responsibility, calling it a “natural response to the crimes of occupation against our people.”
The war in Gaza sparked Surge in violence both in the West Bank under Israeli occupation and Israel. Palestinian extremists attacked and killed Israelis in Israel and the West Bank, as well as increased settler violence against Palestinians.
Israel has had attacks scattered over the past few months, but the last deadly mass-fire attack was in October 2024. Two Palestinians on the West Bank opened fire at major highways and light rail stations in the Tel Aviv region, killing seven people and injuring many others. Hamas military building claimed responsibility for the attack.
Police say the two men fired fire in the Jaffa district of Tel Aviv. This involves shooting directly into a busy, light rail carriage with passengers stopped at the station.
Data from the UN Humanitarian Bureau says at least 49 Israelis were killed by Israeli or Palestinians in the West Bank between the start of the war and the July 2025.
Meanwhile, Israeli forces and civilians killed at least 968 Palestinians in Israel and the West Bank. ___
