Sherrone Moore, who was fired as the Michigan Wolverines’ football coach earlier in the day, was in police custody late Wednesday night after being the subject of an assault investigation.
In a statement, the Pittsfield Township, Michigan, Police Department said it was dispatched Wednesday afternoon and said “a suspect in this incident was taken into custody for the purpose of investigating an alleged assault. This incident does not appear to be random in nature and there does not appear to be an ongoing threat to the community.”

“The suspect is being held in the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. The investigation is ongoing at this time. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and the current status of the investigation, we are prohibited from releasing further details.”
Earlier in the day, the Saline Police Department, a small town west of Pittsfield Township, reported finding Moore and taking him into custody, then transporting him to the custody of Pittsfield Township police.
The University of Michigan immediately fired Moore with cause after the school’s investigation found “credible evidence” that the coach had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
“This conduct is a clear violation of university policy, and UM has no tolerance for such conduct,” Warde Manuel, the school’s athletic director, said in a statement posted on social media.
Biff Poggi was named interim head coach.
The firing came in the midst of a 9-3 season in which Moore was suspended for two games for his involvement in the program’s sign-stealing scandal.
The Wolverines finished the regular season ranked 18th in the College Football Playoff rankings. They are scheduled to play No. 13 Texas (9-3) in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando on Dec. 31.
Moore, 39, had a 16-8 record at Michigan since taking over for Jim Harbaugh, who left to become head coach in the National Football League (NFL) after winning the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Chargers.
