DALLAS (AP) — A second detainee was shot last week in an attack on the Dallas Immigrant Field Office, his family said Tuesday.
In a statement shared by the Unified Latin American Citizens’ Federation, the family confirmed that Miguel Angel Garcia Harnandez, 32, had succumbed to his injuries after being taken from life support.
The Mexican man was one of three detainees shot dead in the September 24 attack on a Dallas immigration customs facility. The attack killed one man and seriously injured two other detainees. Authorities previously identified the man killed in the attack as Nolan Guzman Fuentes.
Authorities say a 29-year-old Joshua Yarn gunman fired indiscriminately from a nearby rooftop. They said he hated the US government and wanted to incite fear by killing federal agents. The ice personnel were not injured in the shooting, so Yarn fatally shot himself after the attack.
The attack came as strengthened immigration enforcement sparked a backlash against ice agents and sparked fears about immigrant communities across the country.
“My husband, Miguel, was a good man in our family, a loving father and a provider of our family,” Stephanie Gofeny said in a statement. “We just bought our first home together and he worked hard every day to ensure our children had what they needed. His death is a pointless tragedy that shattered our family. I don’t know how to explain to our children that our father is gone.”
Gopheny is hoping for a fifth child, Lelack said.
