Sir Richard Branson’s family is mourning a great loss.
The Virgin Group co-founder revealed the recent death of his wife of 50 years, Joanne Templeman, in a statement reflecting on their life together. She was 80 years old.
“I am heartbroken to learn that my wife and partner of 50 years, Joan, has passed away,” Richard, 75, wrote in an Instagram post on Nov. 25, along with a photo of her. “She was the most wonderful mother and grandmother our children and grandchildren could have hoped for.”
“She was my best friend, my rock, my guiding light, my world. I love you forever, Joan.”
Richard and Joan married in 1989 and have two children, Holly and Sam. (Richard and Joan are also the grandparents of Etta Bell, Artie and Eva Deia, and Bluey Leif Richard Branson).
Following the news of Joan’s death, friends and colleagues shared sweet memories of their time with her and the Branson family.
“Thinking of you, Sir Richard,” Ian Somerhalder wrote in the comments. “When I was able to spend time with her on Necker Island, she was so thoughtful and kind. An unimaginable loss for the brothers. Sending you and your family nothing but love.”
