President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House this week, NBC News reported on Monday.
The meeting was scheduled after the two leaders spoke by phone twice over the weekend to discuss the possibility of the United States approving the transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, according to NBC.
President Trump said Monday that he is considering sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine as a “new stage of aggression” to pressure Russia to end its war with its neighbor.
Zelensky last spoke to President Trump in August, shortly after the American president met with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska.
Ukraine’s use of the Tomahawk, a subsonic cruise missile that can hit targets 1,000 miles away, would allow it to strengthen its counterattack against Russia.
The war between Ukraine and Russia has been escalating since Russia invaded in 2022.
Reuters reported last week that a Kremlin spokesman said the Russian leadership was awaiting details of the Tomahawk supply deal. The missiles reportedly cost an average of $1.3 million each.
President Trump was traveling to the Middle East on Monday.
He first visited Israel, then flew to Egypt as the Gaza peace deal was being finalized.
