CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (AP) – Two state troopers pursuing a vehicle in Pennsylvania were shot and killed in a gunfight with a suspect, who died, authorities said.
Pennsylvania State Police said the troopers were taken to a hospital in critical condition after Wednesday’s shooting.
They were responding to a report of a theft at a sporting goods store. The statement said multiple suspects fled in a vehicle. Officers spotted the vehicle and a pursuit ensued.
Spike strips stopped the vehicle. Two women came out and were taken into custody, the statement said.
A man in the vehicle “fired at the officers, striking two of them,” the statement said. “Officers returned fire and the man was fatally injured.”
Gov. Josh Shapiro said he and his wife, Lori, are praying for the officers and urged others to join them.
“Pennsylvania’s law enforcement officers are some of the best and brightest among us, running into danger every day to keep our communities safe,” Shapiro said in a post on social platform X.
The shooting occurred in southern Franklin County, about 85 miles (135 kilometers) northwest of Baltimore.
