Openai has two of the top 3 free apps Apple’s The App Store and its new video generator app Sora have gotten the coveted No. 1 spot.
The artificial intelligence startup launched SORA on Tuesday, allowing users to generate remixed videos created by other users and post them to their shared feeds. SORA is only available on iOS devices and is invited-based. This means that users need code to access it.
Despite these restrictions, SORA has secured the top spot in the App Store. Google‘s gemini and openai generated chatbot chatgpt.
“It’s been epic to see what human collective creativity can do so far,” Bill Peebles, director of Open Sora, wrote in an X post on Friday. “The team is repetitive and listening to feedback.”
Sora is equipped with Openai’s latest video and audio generation model called Sora 2. Openai said the model can create scenes and sounds with “advanced realism,” according to a blog post. The startup’s first video and audio generation model, SORA, was announced in February 2024.
Openai said it has taken steps to address potential safety concerns regarding the SORA app. This involves explicitly controlling the user about how they are used on the platform. However, some of the first videos posted to the app, including one depicting Openai CEO Sam Altman’s shoplifting, sparked debate about its usefulness, potential harm and legality.
“It’s easy to imagine a degenerate case of AI video generation, where we all end up being sucked into an RL-optimized slop feed,” Altman wrote in X’s post Tuesday. “The team has put great care and thought into trying to find a way to create a fun product that doesn’t fall into that trap and came up with a lot of promising ideas.”
