Openai held its annual Dev Day on Monday. There, the company deployed plans to build the app into ChatGpt. The demo is impressive and shows how programs like Spotify and Figma can call or discover the ChatGPT window without leaving. With so many of the world of Tech, where barrels are getting so many towards AI integration, Openai’s demo is the best picture of what the AI-first Internet actually looks like, with interfaces such as ChatGPT querying for information and running commands directly.
If you’re looking closely, you may have noticed that there is plenty of space in this system to change money. Last week, the company launched Instant Checkout, an agent shopping system that serves as a payment infrastructure for one-time purchases at stores selling through Shopify, Etsy, or Stripe. Now the app provides a front-end infrastructure and allows service providers to incorporate their own interface into ChatGPT.
In short, Openai currently has all its works set up for AI-driven commercial transactions, establishing ChatGpt as a place for customers to buy and sell. It is a big new business line for the company and has a major impact on the high-tech industry. In this world, Openai is not only competing with Google and humanity, but also with Amazon and Wal-Mart.
If you look at Openai’s pending app partners in the launch announcement, you can see how well your vision will reach. ChatGpt can call taxis via Uber, book trips with Expedia, call plumbers or locksmiths via Thumbtack, order groceries from Instacart, prepare from Doordash, or prepare large quantities of items from Target. Without too much work, CHATGPT could be a portal for most users’ discretionary spending.
If it works, this is worth more than just a 20-month subscription. The exact terms of the arrangement are still unknown, but like other app stores, OpenAI is good for getting a portion of the money spent on the platform. Additionally, ChatGpt recommends products and uses a wealth of user data. This further leaps the balance of power between Openai and retailers. Under Ben Thompson’s terms, ChatGpt will become a super-agguager, pouring customers into retailers and providing an entry point for a constant amount of commercial transactions. While Openai has many potential business lines to pursue, it’s not an exaggeration to say that AI-driven commerce is one of the most advantageous options.
Openai is not the only one looking to this outlook. On the same day as ChatGPT’s announcement, Adobe released a report predicting that this year’s holiday will be dominated by AI-assisted shopping. Another report called Agent Commerce, called MasterCard, is as a “new competitive arena” for finance. Google has already launched its own competitive protocol for agent commerce called AP2. This is a wider range but less momentum than the Openai version.
The simplest version of AI-driven shopping is to use ChatGpt to find products instead of searching. If you’re looking for canvas tennis shoes that cost under $80, ChatGpt is as easy to find as a Google search. However, AI systems do not have to be passive. The AP2 specification includes the offer of purchases that agents will start if they want to purchase concert tickets as soon as they become available. Of course, there may be agents on the other side of the transaction, and they are happy to negotiate with the purchasing agent for the best deal and bundle the goods under the right circumstances. If retailers and customers are willing to make a leap, changes can extend well beyond the simple “buy” button.

The biggest unanswered question is whether the shopping public is actually interested. AI shopping is clearly attractive to Openai, and while companies like Stripe and MasterCard also see many benefits, users are less interested in agent shopping systems beyond simple product searches. But then they had no chance. These systems are not even properly available at present. It’s only a few months ago that the average user can try out the agent shopping system completely.
There will be a lot of riding on how they react when they ultimately do so.
