nvidia The company said Monday that it will invest $100 billion in Openai as the AI lab sets up to build a multi-tenant billion-dollar data center based on NVIDIA AI chips.
Openai plans to build and deploy an NVIDIA system that requires 10 gigawatts of power, the company said Monday. Gigawatts are the increasingly used measures of power to explain the largest clusters of AI chips.
Nvidia’s shares rose 3% during trading Monday.
The partnership highlights Linked Openai and Nvidia as two of the biggest drivers of the recent artificial intelligence boom. Nvidia’s GPU demand first began to rise in 2022 when Openai first released ChatGPT. Openai relies on Nvidia’s AI chips to develop and deploy software to users.
It also shows just the number of Nvidia chips Openai needs to develop next-generation artificial intelligence that can do more than the current model. It also suggests Openai will need more and more chips to serve its users, saying it has 700 million active users on Monday.
“This is a monumental size,” CEO Jensen Fan told CNBC’s John Fort in an interview in San Jose on Monday, along with Openry CEOs Sam Altman and Open Greg Brockman.
“Infrastructure calculations will be the basis for the future economy and will use what we are building at Nvidia to create new AI breakthroughs and empower people and businesses on a large scale,” Openai CEO Sam Altman said in a statement.
In August, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang told investors that it would cost between $50 billion and $60 billion to build a 1 Gigawatt data center capacity, of which about $35 billion was for NVIDIA chips and systems.
The company said the first phase of investment will be online in the second half of 2026 using NVIDIA’s next-generation Vera Rubin Systems.
Nvidia will join the roster of investors who valued Openai at $500 billion in the recent secondary round. Microsoft is one of Openai’s early investors and has strategic partnerships to integrate the Openai model into cloud services, Azure, and Microsoft Office. Other Openai investors include SoftBank and Thrive Capital.
The company said the partnership complements the infrastructure work done with Microsoft, Oracle, SoftBank and its Stargate Project.
Altman called Nvidia and Microsoft “the most important partners” of the two in an interview with CNBC.
Huang said Nvidia’s investments are “added to everything announced and contracted.”
He showed Fort that it added to what the company told Wall Street about its financial expectations.
