nokia announced on Tuesday Nvidia is acquiring a $1 billion stake in a networking company, its latest partnership with an artificial intelligence chip maker.
Nokia’s stock price soared 22% on the news.
Nokia plans to issue more than 166 million new shares and use the proceeds to fund AI and other general corporate objectives.
The two companies also entered into a strategic partnership to collaborate on the development of next-generation 6G mobile phone technology. Nokia said it would adapt its 5G and 6G software to run on Nvidia’s chips and collaborate on network technology for AI.
Nokia said NVIDIA will consider incorporating its technology into future AI infrastructure plans.
Finnish company Nokia is best known for its early mobile phones, but in recent years it has mainly supplied 5G mobile phone equipment to telecommunications providers.
The announcement comes as NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang prepares to address policymakers and government leaders in Washington, D.C., for the keynote address at the company’s developer conference.
Nokia and Nvidia will discuss their partnership and some of their plans at the conference.
Nvidia knows it’s at the center of the AI world and has acquired stakes in several strategic partners in recent months.
In September, it pledged $5 billion to its former rival. intelannounced that it will invest $100 billion in OpenAI. It also committed to investing $500 million in self-driving car startup Wayve and $667 million in British cloud provider Nscale.
