tesla CEO Elon Musk announced Wednesday that the electric car maker will no longer sell its full self-driving (monitored) software for a flat fee and will instead make it available only as a monthly subscription.
“Tesla will stop selling FSD after February 14th,” Musk said in an early morning post on his social media platform
The company’s stock price fell more than 2% on Wednesday.
FSD, which starts at $99 a month, is key to Tesla’s future as Musk seeks to establish the company as a leader in self-driving mobility.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Last year, Tesla launched a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. The company also offers a ride-hailing service in San Francisco, but the rides are always chauffeured.
the company is far behind of the alphabet Waymo, a driverless driving service. Waymo topped 450,000 weekly paid rides in December, according to a letter to investors from Tiger Global obtained by CNBC.
Waymo operates in Austin, the San Francisco area, Phoenix, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, and aims to expand into several more cities in 2026.
Tesla reported fourth-quarter deliveries and production numbers in early January, marking the EV maker’s second consecutive annual decline. The number of vehicles delivered in the fourth quarter was 418,227 units, down approximately 16% from the same period last year, and the number of vehicles produced was down 5.5% from the same period last year.
Tesla announced its fourth quarter financial results on January 28th.
