Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Premier League leaders Arsenal at West Ham United on Saturday, leaving them in an even worse position, with a nine-point difference at the top of the table with a game in hand.

Bernardo Silva put City ahead in the 31st minute with a lucky chip past goalkeeper Mads Hermansen, and four minutes later Konstantinos Mavropanos headed home Jarrod Bowen’s corner kick after Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 with a late red card.

City manager Josep Guardiola insisted the title race could be over if his side drop points again, and City pressed on with increasing desperation in search of a winner after the break.

Erling Haaland, who has scored four goals in his last 17 games, drew a fingertip save from Hermansen before sending his shot wide from Antoine Semenyo’s cutback.

Then, in the fifth minute of stoppage time, Marc Guehi fired wide, giving West Ham a deserved point in the relegation battle.

Manchester City suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat in the Champions League first leg against Real Madrid on Wednesday, dealing another blow to their title hopes and remaining second in the table with 61 points from 30 games. West Ham moved out of the relegation zone for the first time since December, moving up to 17th place with 29 points, one place ahead of Nottingham Forest, who have a game in hand.

Man City dominated possession early on, but fell short of creating chances, which was a theme throughout the contest.

Haaland missed the first chance by completely misjudging a header from Rayan Eyt-Nouri’s cross, but Silva opened the scoring minutes later.

City’s captain appeared to be aiming for a cross to Haaland, but his cross flew over Hermansen and into the side netting.

After Gianluigi Donnarumma missed a punch, Mavropanos headed home Bowen’s corner kick, leaving Guardiola in his hands as he was stopped on the touchline in the stands.

Semenyo almost restored City’s lead at the end of half-time, but his shot went just wide of the post and Hermansen was brought down.

The visitors made two substitutions in the first hour, bringing on Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku, which paid off almost immediately, with Cherki bringing on Haaland, who was denied by Hermansen.

Tijani Lijnders’ late free-kick bounced off the crossbar and City gasped, but when the final chance went to Guehi, he was unable to find the net.
