Fires are still burning in several buildings, the smell of smoke is in the air and the constant screams of fire trucks and police vehicles can be heard.
Roads around the site are closed to traffic, and entry and exit is only possible on foot. Police cordoned off the area, but many people gathered behind police lines to watch the flames flashing orange at night.
CNN’s team on the ground can see firefighters carrying heavy equipment and dozens of fire trucks parked nearby.
While two tall hoses are spraying water onto the burning tower, other buildings are still on fire and there are no hoses to water them.
On the ground, many residents can be heard wondering why more equipment isn’t being used and why fire helicopters aren’t being dispatched.
Occasionally, a loud thud is heard, a large pillar of fire erupts from an apartment window, and cinders are seen flying from outside the building.
Remember: The building is covered with bamboo scaffolding, which is common at construction sites in Hong Kong. It is now peeling off the side of the tower and falling from 10 to 20 stories, sometimes hitting the rubble and sending showers of sparks.
