A widely shared video across social media in the moments after the accident showed what appeared to be running up the hill as people exited the tram just in front of a crashed tram and cried out.
Carris, the tram-operating company, said the scheduled maintenance was undertaken. It expressed the deepest sadness of the victim and his family in a social media post, promising that all due diligence will be taken when finding the cause of the accident.
The Lisbon city council has stopped operating other trams in the city and ordered immediate inspections, local media reported.
President Marcelo Rebello de Souza expressed his sadness for the affected families, and Lisbon Mayor Carlos Modus said the city is in mourning. “It’s a tragedy we’ve never seen,” Modus said.
The Portuguese government announced on Thursday that a day of mourning for its citizens will be observed. “The tragic accident has caused irreparable losses of human lives, mourning families and disappointing the nation,” the statement said.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also expressed her sadness. “It was sad to learn that the famous Elevedor da Gloria was derailed,” she wrote in X in Portuguese.

The crash crash reportedly occurred at the start of night rush hour, and said at about 6pm all the victims had been pulled out of the wreckage in just two hours.

According to a post from X, US Embassy Lisbon also said it “showed the deepest sadness of all affected people.”
