Not only did the Lakers’ four-game winning streak end with Thursday’s loss, Luka Doncic suffered a left hamstring strain in the second half when the game was already out of reach. Lakers coach JJ Redick said after the game that Doncic will undergo an MRI on Friday to determine the extent of the injury.
It was already a bad night for Doncic, but it got worse early in the third quarter when he started dribbling into the lane and rising for midrange jumpers.
But as soon as he came off the floor, Doncic came down clutching his left hamstring and immediately fell to the floor.
Doncic looked visibly shaken as he walked off the floor.
The Thunder controlled the game from the jump, building a double-digit lead less than four minutes into the game. That lead never went below nine the rest of the way and never went below 23 after the first quarter.
Oklahoma City led 82-51 at halftime.
It was the third time this season that the Thunder (61-16) led by more than 30 points at halftime.
Two of those were against the Lakers (50-27). At halftime on Nov. 12 in Oklahoma City, the Thunder led Los Angeles 70-38.
Dort and Williams immediately made an impact on both ends.
Williams made a pull-up jumper on Oklahoma City’s second possession, then immediately picked up a steal and hit Dort for a 3-pointer.
Dort then had a steal and a quick dunk on the next possession.
Dort made all five of his shots in the first quarter, including four 3-pointers, for 14 points. He also stole second.
He played a big role in slowing down Doncic, who had scored 40 points or more in the last three games and five of the last seven games.
Doncic missed his first four field goals and finished with just 12 points on 3-of-10 shooting. This was tied for the second lowest scoring game of the season.
Immediately after Doncic’s injury, the Thunder got a scare when Dort’s foot came out from under him and he crashed to the floor as he headed for the basket.
Dort got up quickly, but went to the locker room and did not return before play resumed.
Williams had 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Isaiah Joe scored 20-17 in the second half.
Oklahoma City’s 139 points were the most points allowed by the Lakers this season, and the 43-point loss was Los Angeles’ worst since a 44-point loss to Philadelphia in November 2023.
Austin Reeves led the Lakers with 15 points.
