Italy defeated Nepal by 10 wickets in Mumbai, India on Thursday to register their first cricket win in the T20 World Cup.

Brothers Anthony and Justin Mosca clinched victory with an unbeaten stand of 124-0 after Nepal were bowled out for 123 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Italy’s first win in just their second match in the global cricket tournament was also their eighth 10-wicket win in the history of the Men’s T20 World Cup.

Italy join the Netherlands as the only two non-British European teams to win a match at the T20 World Cup.

Nepal, playing their third T20 World Cup, were on a roll after giving England a frightening scare at the same venue on Sunday.

However, Sri Lankan-born wrist spinner Krishan Kargamage named 3-18 players, including captain Rohit Paudel, and helped them defeat Nepal with just three balls left.

The Sydney-bred Mosca brothers smashed Nepal’s attack with nine sixes and eight boundaries, Anthony with 62 not out from 32 balls and Justin with 60 not out from 44 balls, in just 12.4 overs.

Sri Lanka defeats Oman

Earlier, captain Dasun Shanaka broke the record for Sri Lanka’s fastest T20 half-century by defeating Oman by 105 runs at Palekele.

Co-hosts and defending champions India then faced Namibia in New Delhi.

Against a weak bowling attack, Shanaka’s 19-ball 50, Kusal Mendis’ 61 and Pavan Rathnayake’s 60 pushed Sri Lanka to a tournament-high 225-5.

Oman responded hard with 120 for 9, with the wicket shared between five bowlers. Off-spinner Mahesh Teekshana led the way with 2-11 from four overs.

Sri Lanka have two wins from two matches but have yet to play Group B rivals Australia and Zimbabwe.

Oman’s 43-year-old Mohammad Nadeem scored an unbeaten 53 off 56 balls, becoming the oldest player to score in the T20 World Cup’s half-century history. Nadeem was one of two Omani batsmen to score in double figures, with Wasim Ali scoring 27 runs.

Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka and Kamil Mishra in the powerplay, but Rathnayake and Mendis put on a blistering 94 runs for the third wicket off 52 balls.

Shanaka hit five sixes, surpassing Sri Lanka’s previous record of scoring a half-century in 20 balls against India in 2023, and holed out at long-off on the next ball.
