Intuit signs $100M+ deal with OpenAI to bring its apps to ChatGPT

Intuit has signed a multi-year agreement with OpenAI worth more than $100 million that will allow the company’s tax and finance apps to work within ChatGPT and expand the use of OpenAI models across the company’s products.

Intuit said tools such as TurboTax, Credit Karma, QuickBooks and Mailchimp will be accessible through ChatGPT, allowing users to ask questions and complete tasks such as estimating tax refunds, exploring credit options and managing business finances.

With your permission, Intuit’s apps can access your financial data to generate responses and complete tasks like sending marketing messages or issuing bill reminders. Customers can also use tools within ChatGPT to check credit cards, personal loans, and mortgages.

The agreement reflects a broader trend of technology and financial companies adopting large language models for consumer and business software. In October, OpenAI introduced a way for developers to build apps accessible through ChatGPT. Early participants in the program included Booking.com, Expedia, Spotify, and several other consumer and productivity platforms.

However, Intuit’s integration differs from existing ChatGPT apps because it is used for tasks that can directly impact financial decisions. Such applications have raised concerns about the reliability of AI systems that may produce false or misleading outputs.

Intuit employs multiple validation methods and leverages large domain-specific datasets to minimize the risk of errors or “hallucinatory” reactions, Intuit spokesperson Bruce Chan told TechCrunch.

“When our AI provides answers and guidance to our customers, it leverages Intuit’s deep, years of expertise and data that gives us a 360-degree view of our customers,” said Chan. “This allows us to ensure that the answers given are relevant and based on the customer’s own data, reflecting Intuit’s years of expertise.”

Chan said Intuit continues to stand behind the accuracy guarantees provided through its products, including TurboTax, but declined to say whether the company or its customers would be at risk for errors resulting from AI-generated recommendations or insights.

Intuit has expanded its use of AI in recent years to leverage its large data infrastructure. In 2023, the company introduced Intuit Assist, an AI assistant that works across its products.

The partnership also includes Intuit expanding its use of OpenAI models across its business. The company is already using OpenAI’s AI models alongside other commercial and open source large-scale language models. Intuit said the partnership will give it access to new audiences through ChatGPT and add new distribution channels for small business and consumer financial tools.

“This partnership furthers Intuit’s use of OpenAI’s frontier models to power select AI agents across Intuit’s platforms,” said Chan.

The deal also includes Intuit’s continued use of ChatGPT Enterprise, which the company says it has deployed internally to support employee workflows.
