The 2026 edition, which began on February 7, will conclude with the favorites and the tournament’s co-hosts taking on the dark horse Kiwis in the final.
New Zealanders will keep a piece of their history in mind as they aim for their first T20 World Cup crown.
Al Jazeera Sports has detailed coverage of this match.
What are India’s strengths and weaknesses?
Samson, Bumrah and 12th man continue to excel
Holder will enter the final the same way he started the tournament as the favorite.
But their performance during that period will give New Zealand great hope.
India’s clear strength is the depth they can call upon. Abhishek Sharma is the highest-ranked T20 batsman in the world but has not had an underwhelming performance in the tournament – enter Sanju Samson.
Abhishek’s opening partner, who scored fifties in the last two innings, has been the key to India’s resurgence and strong run to reach the finals.
Samson slotted in between Abhishek and Ishan Kishan, who remains a strong option at the top of the order, but his complete destruction of the former, and the latter two left-handed combinations, proved to be a game-changer with the bat for India.
Jasprit Bumrah’s final over against England was seen as the decisive moment of victory after conceding six runs in a close semi-final.
Later, even Player of the Match Samson admitted that the award should have gone to Bumrah. Because without him, India would not have made it to the final.
The right-handed seamer’s accuracy is undeniable, especially under pressure. Top-ranked T20 bowler Varun Chakravarthy, who had 12 casualties, will lead the spin attack.
The 35,000-strong home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium was seen as a major factor in India’s semi-final victory, but there was a deafening silence and England narrowly edged the hosts.
Now, India’s “12th man on the field”, as the crowd is well known, will have 132,000 supporters, most of whom will be rooting for the Boys in Blue.
Unstable batting continues to plague India
Samson’s excellence doesn’t entirely mask the fact that the rest of the top order is struggling to find form.
Abhishek entered the tournament as the world’s number one T20 batsman but then suffered three consecutive ducks.
He showed glimpses of his talent by scoring 50 runs against Zimbabwe in the Super Eights, but suffered disastrous defeats against West Indies and England.

What are New Zealand’s strengths and weaknesses?
greater than the sum of its parts
One of the smallest nations to take part in major ICC events, New Zealand have been at their best over the years when they have assembled a tight-knit team.
This edition is no exception.
It doesn’t include some of the notable players who have worn the Black Caps over the years, but as South Africa learned at their own cost in the semi-finals, the Kiwis are more than capable of beating any team 1-11.
Mitchell Santner’s captaincy, not to mention his world-renowned rotational ability, perhaps best describes the team. Although modest, he is undaunted by the glitz, glamor and ego of his high-profile opponents.
With all-rounders Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra back as batsmen, Santner can always bring out their all-round ability.
The power and destruction provided by the opening pair of Tim Seifert and Finn Allen was on full display in the semi-final against the Proteas, especially with the latter scoring an astonishing century.
With the pace of Lockie Ferguson and the smarts of fellow seamers Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy, the depth of the winners extends to the bowling, with Ish Sodhi and Cole McConchie, who stood out at 2-9 against South Africa, ably supporting their captain in the spin department.
fielding
If you want to see some truly great defensive performances over the past decade, New Zealand will continue to feature prominently.
Phillips is the preeminent fielder in the world, and his abilities probably cause the Kiwi to be considered the best fielder in the tournament.
Everything is made to look simple in the field, but a reputation for spectacular and often gravity-defying acrobatic endeavors makes Kiwi fielding almost worth the price of admission alone.
low level gaffe
New Zealand can climb great heights, but they sometimes fall short because they lack true superstar status.
Reaching the last four with just two losses (the only team to lose beyond the Supers Eight) should be celebrated, but it is also a warning.
The power hitters at the top of the pecking order are probably slightly disproportionate towards the middle and the Kiwis may need some players to step up, especially their finishers, but there is no better time to step up than in the finals.
How did India fare in the 2026 T20 World Cup?
India has endured a crowded tournament so far, with their top-order batsmen failing to hit the mark.
A below-average victory in the opening group stage game against the United States was quickly forgotten after a comprehensive victory against rival Pakistan clinched the spot. With India now certain to advance to the second phase, they defeated the Netherlands and secured their place at the top with three wins from three games.
For India, the Super Eights started with a loss to South Africa, who won the final in 2024, making the match against Zimbabwe a must-win match.
Abhishek Sharma returned to form by scoring 50 in a 72-run win against the Africans. However, all-rounder Hardik Pandya was named the Player of the Match for his half-century and performance with the ball.
However, the final match was against West Indies, with the winner securing the second spot in the group.
Sanju Samson produced the calmest innings under the pressure of the run chase to lead India to a five-wicket win in Kolkata and a place in the semi-finals.
Samson, who had been missed in the previous three matches, played in the eleven in the previous match and made his 97th appearance as India achieved an impressive win in front of a packed Eden Gardens crowd on Sunday.
The right-hander had an equally brilliant innings in the semi-final against England at the Wankhede Stadium, scoring 89 runs. Despite Jacob Bethell hitting a century for the English, it was the Indians who held on for a seven-point victory.

How did New Zealand perform in the T20 World Cup?
New Zealand started the season with a comfortable five-wicket victory over Afghanistan, who were unable to contain the Kiwis’ batting power. The second match was a show from Finn Allen and Tim Seifert as they defeated the United Arab Emirates chasing 175 wickets by 10 wickets.
Santner’s team were unable to contain the Proteas chasing 176 and ultimately lost by seven wickets, resulting in their first defeat to South Africa. They finished the group stage with an easy eight-wicket win over Canada.
The first Super Eight match against Pakistan ended in a defeat. The second game was against co-hosts Sri Lanka, and New Zealand secured a vital two points and a healthy net run rate to secure their place in the semi-finals.
England came back late to beat New Zealand in the final match of the Super Eights, but Pakistan were unable to sustain a crushing defeat against Sri Lanka, and the Black Caps’ place in the finals was confirmed.
In the semi-final against South Africa, New Zealand was in a strong position considering their undefeated opponent. But the form book was thrown out the window as the Kiwis secured a commanding nine-wicket victory over the Proteas.
