“On our way back to Berekum from Samreboj, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road in an attempt to prevent us from passing,” the club said in a statement on Monday.
“As the driver attempted to reverse, masked men with guns and assault rifles began firing at the bus. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes for cover.”
The Ghana Football Association later announced that 20-year-old Frimpong had died.
“The GFA has received with deep shock and deep sadness the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong from Berekum Chelsea Football Club,” the FA said in a statement.
“This tragic incident is not only a huge loss for Berekum Chelsea, but also for Ghanaian football as a whole. Dominic is a promising young talent whose dedication and passion exemplified the spirit of our league.”
He said safety measures would be strengthened for clubs traveling for domestic competitions.
There was a similar incident in 2023, when the Legon Cities team bus was attacked after a game in Samartex, but no injuries were reported.
