Taiwanese Olympic boxing champion Lin Yu-ting has returned to the ring and won a gold medal following the gender controversy that erupted at the 2024 Paris Games, her coach announced on Thursday.

Lin and Algerian boxer Imane Kherif were at the center of the storm in Paris, where they won Olympic titles in separate weight classes.

Lin won the gold medal in the 60kg category on Wednesday at Taiwan’s first national games since the Olympics.

A photo posted to Lin’s Facebook Stories showed her smiling while holding a gold medal.

“It was good. We just prepared as we should,” said her coach Tseng Tzu-chan, acknowledging that it was Lin’s first competitive match since Paris.

Tseng said Lin was scheduled to compete in the world championships in Liverpool in September and had agreed to undergo a mandatory genetic sex test.

Tseng said that despite submitting the results to World Boxing, Lin has yet to receive a response and is holding off on participating in future international competitions.

“Whether we get results depends on the results. If we get results, we will be able to participate in many international events,” Tseng said.

Under World Boxing’s new policy, athletes over the age of 18 who wish to compete in the women’s category will be required to undergo a one-time PCR (polymerase chain reaction) or medically equivalent genetic test.

Twelve boxers, including a five-member women’s team from France, have reportedly been banned from competing in Liverpool for failing to meet deadlines for submitting test results.

Lin and Kerif have been excluded from the 2023 World Championships after the International Boxing Association (IBA) announced they had failed eligibility tests.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which intervened to supervise boxing at the Paris Games, allowed both men to compete, saying they were victims of a “sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA.” Both went on to win gold medals.

During the tournament, both athletes were attacked on social media and subjected to rumors and misinformation about their biological sex.

The IOC defended them, saying they were born and raised as women and had passports to prove it.
