The Manchester-born fighter became one of the UK’s most famous boxers, winning world titles in light welterweight and welterweight. During his 15-year professional career, he secured 45 wins from 48 games before retiring in 2012.

Hutton’s death prompted a pouring of respect from the world of sports.

Former England and Manchester United midfielder David Beckham posted on Instagram: “Ricky was kind of one. It’s just heartbreaking,” heavyweight champion Tyson Fury wrote: “I’m a sinner.”

The football figure also paid tribute to his lifelong supporters of Manchester City. Before City’s Premier League match against Manchester United on Sunday, Etihad Stadium gave a minute of applause and fans chanted his name.

Mayor Pep Guardiola described him as a “true champion” and “part of the Man City family.” Wayne Rooney, who once carried a Hutton belt into the ring, said in X that he was called “legend, warrior, great man.”

Hutton’s career was characterized by memorable victories over Costia Ziu and Jose Luis Castillo, but his only defeat came against boxing greats Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.

In recent years, Hatton has remained close to sports. He attempted a comeback in 2012, fought at an exhibition with Marco Antonio Barrera in 2022, and announced plans to face Isalda in Dubai earlier this year. He also spoke openly about his fight against depression and was featured in the 2023 documentary Hutton, exploring his personal struggles and mental health.
