Russia has been causing rain from a massive overnight attack on missiles and drones at Mass, officials said on Sunday.
Moscow has been bolstering its attacks, particularly in recent weeks, at Ukrainian energy grids and gas production sites, with the fourth war approaching, and diplomatic efforts to end the battle have stagnated.
Four of the victims of the overnight attack were families who were killed when their residential buildings in the western region of LVIV, adjacent to Poland, were destroyed, local prosecutors said.
Industrial parks in the LVIV region’s capital were also on fire, leaving some of the city without power, said Mayor Andri Sadovy, who urged residents to stay early Sunday as authorities are fighting multiple fires.
A Reuters correspondent heard the explosion jumping through the dark morning sky as the targets involved from several directions.
The attack on LVIV was the biggest of the war in the LVIV region, Governor Maksym Kozytskyi said, adding that 140 drones and 23 missiles were involved.
In a village outside LVIV where the family was killed, rescuers excavated a mountain of tile rubs. Only the foundations of their building remained.
Local official Voldim Hatnik said nearby homes of the other 10 people were damaged to the point of being repaired.
In Zapoljazia, southeastern Ukraine, one person has been killed and 10 others have been injured as more than 73,000 customers have left unauthorized customers, Gov. Ivan Fedorov said.
The service had been restored to more than 20,000 people by the early afternoon, he said.
Private infrastructure has also been damaged in the areas of Ivano Frankivsk, Vinnizzia, Chernichv, Carson, Kharkiv and Odesa, Prime Minister Julia Swillidenko said.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said the energy facilities were damaged in Zapolijazia and North Chernichv regions. Naftgaz, a gas and oil company in the Ukrainian province, said Russia had hit and damaged its gas infrastructure but had not provided details.
The Russian Ministry of Defense said on Sunday that its forces attacked Ukraine’s military industrial facilities and gas and energy infrastructure overnight.
“Another deliberate act of fear towards civilians,” Swillidenko wrote to X: “Moscow continues to attack homes, schools and energy facilities.
Poland scrambles jets to ensure air safety
President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russian forces have fired more than 50 missiles and nearly 500 drones.
NATO member Poland said they scrambled the aircraft early on Sunday to ensure air safety.
“The Polish and Allied aircraft are operating in airspace, but ground air defense and radar reconnaissance systems are in top form,” the Polish operational order said in a post in X.
Members of Eastern Frank NATO are on alert after Poland fired suspicions of Russian drones in airspace in September, and drone sightings and air invasions, including Copenhagen and Munich, caused chaos for European aviation.
Bilinia’s Lithuania airport was closed for several hours after reporting a series of balloons heading towards the airport on Saturday that was possible. Commercial flights were usually using routing when Poland’s Lublin and Luzso airports near the Ukraine border were closed early on Sunday, according to flight tracking service Flightradar24.
