European powerhouse PSG and South American powerhouse Flamengo will clash in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final, with both teams aiming for another big trophy to cap off a stellar year.
Flamengo have just completed a historic double by winning the Copa Libertadores and Brazilian Serie A titles, a feat they have only achieved four times before, while PSG have added four trophies to their collection this year, including the UEFA Champions League trophy.
The revamped Intercontinental Cup brings together the winners of each federation’s top club competition in a shorter format designed to complement FIFA’s expanded 32-team Club World Cup.
Here’s what you need to know about the finals.
What is FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2025?
This is the second edition of the Intercontinental Cup, an annual knockout tournament organized by FIFA.
The tournament will consist of six continental champions from each of the six FIFA confederations: PSG (UEFA), Al Ahly FC (AFC), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF), Flamengo (CONMEBOL), Pyramid FC (CAF) and Auckland City FC (OFC).
The tournament began in September, with teams competing in a single-elimination format.
The match ended as follows:
Round 1, 14 September: Pyramids 3-0 Auckland City (Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup Playoffs) Round 2, 23 September: Al Ahly 1-3 Pyramids (Africa-Asia-Pacific Cup) Round 2, 10 December: Cruz Azul 1-2 Flamengo (American Derby) Play-offs, 13 December: Flamengo 2-0 Pyramids (Challenger Cup)
The first two matches of the tournament were held in Cairo, Egypt and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The next two editions were held in Al Rayyan, Qatar.

How is the Intercontinental Cup different from the FIFA Club World Cup?
From 1960 to 2004, the Intercontinental Cup was held annually, pitting European and South American champions against each other.
In 2005, it was renamed the FIFA Club World Cup to allow other continental champions to participate. However, this year the quadrennial tournament was expanded to 32 teams and the competition resumed, with Chelsea crowned the first winners of the new format.
Similarly, the Intercontinental Cup restarted in a new format in 2024 when Real Madrid defeated Mexican Club Pachuca.
Although the Intercontinental Cup carries the prestigious tag of annual ‘world champion’, it still ranks below the expansion Club World Cup in terms of prestige and importance.
Where will the finals be held?
Al Rayyan’s Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, named after the former emir of Qatar, will be the venue for the Intercontinental Cup final. The 45,032-capacity venue hosted seven matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

How did PSG and Flamengo reach the final?
According to the format confirmed in September 2024, PSG received an automatic bye to the final after winning the 2024-25 UEFA Champions League title. The Parisians defeated Inter Milan 5-0 and were crowned European champions.
However, Flamengo’s path to the final was not an easy one. The Rio de Janeiro team first won the Copa Libertadores title, then defeated Cruz Azul 2-1 in the American Derby, and then defeated Pyramid 2-0 in the Challenger Cup to set up a showdown with PSG.
