“We had a really great trip and saw some great places,” he said. “One year we went to Europe, and there was a time when we were driving around the French countryside with the kids in the back seat of this crazy little car that we rented.”
“I speak everything with a French accent,” Eric added. “For some reason, for those 15 minutes, my French accent was perfect. I don’t know where it came from.”
And he also spoke directly to his daughters, giving them a final message about the lessons he learned from his ALS journey.
“First of all, live in the moment. It’s hard, but I’ve learned to do it,” Eric told his daughters. “Secondly, fall in love. You don’t necessarily have to fall in love with someone, although I recommend that too, but fall in love with something. Find your passion. That joy is something that ultimately makes you want to get up and drive you throughout the day.”
“Thirdly, choose your friends wisely, find them, let them find you, and give yourself to them,” he continued. “The best of them will give it back to you without judgment, conditions, or questions.”
Eric continued, “Finally, when you are faced with a challenge, whether you are healthy or not, fight with all your being and with dignity. Never give up and fight until your last breath. This disease is slowly taking its toll on me. It takes a toll on my body, but it will never take away my spirit. You are both strong and resilient. You have inherited that resilience from me,” he added.
