Lionel Messi confirmed he has good memories of playing home qualifying with the Argentina national team for the last time in his illustrious career.

The former Barcelona scored twice in front of a raucous sold-out crowd who gathered at the Estadio Monument to say goodbye to Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Venezuela 3-0 on Thursday.

“It’s something I’ve always dreamed of being able to finish this way here,” Messi said.

“I’ve been through a lot on this pitch, and although it’s not that good and not that good, it’s always a joy to play for Argentina in front of the fans.”

Messi has yet to give clues as to whether he will retire from the top level of the sport, but qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup will begin in 2027 when he was 40 years old.

The Argentine captain scored in the 39th and 80th minutes, while Lautaro Martinez added a goal on the 76th.

Messi currently scores 36 goals in South America’s World Cup qualifiers, making him the highest scoring leader ever.

His Inter Miami teammate Luis Suarez, who has 29 goals in the continental qualifiers, has retired from the Uruguay national team. Bolivia’s Marcelo Moreno Martins is third with 22.

Going forward, Messi has made it clear that he will compete in next year’s World Cup only if he feels physically healthy.

“I’m excited, I’m enthusiastic. It feels like it every day. If I feel good, I enjoy it.

Already qualified, the World Cup champions will extend the tally to 38 points and remain above South American qualifying rankings, regardless of what happens next Tuesday.

Venezuela is about to compete in their first World Cup, but is in seventh place with 18 points. They are still competing to advance to the intercontinental playoffs.
