What is the process of making a Dance with the Stars costume?
If you think the quick steps are fast, wait until you hear about the pace of the costume department.
“We meet sets and lighting designers, dancers and talents and create stories (each pair),” costume designer Daniela Gschwentner told TV insiders in 2017. “Then we sketch ideas. We’ll make Max for five days. The shop is a big company.”
In fact, costume designer Stephen Normanly said the pair would usually try out costumes for the first time just hours before showtime. And the department “may be using a pair of pants again for the boys,” he continued, but everything has become a common practice each week.
As Gschwendtner added, “We reuse things for group numbers and promotional shoots, but not for competition. We don’t reuse things unless we have a specific reason to do so. We try to keep different things fresh and new each week.
