China’s newest and most capable aircraft carrier successfully fired three different aircraft, according to Chinese state media, which released footage for the first time to mark a technology breakthrough using new electromagnetic catapults.
Footage released by state broadcaster CCTV on Monday shows China’s fifth-generation J-35 stealth fighter, 4.5-generation J-15T fighter jet and KJ-600 early warning and control aircraft took off from Fujian Aircraft carriers using an advanced launch system also known as EMALS.
State media has welcomed the test as another “breakthrough” in the development of China’s aircraft carriers and a “milestone” to advance naval transformation.
The only aircraft carrier in the world with an EMALS system is the USS Gerald R Ford, the newest carrier in the US Navy, certified for flight deck operations using the EMALS system in spring 2022.
This development comes when it is in Beijing for a meeting aimed at strengthening bilateral exchanges, including military-to-military communications, on its first visit to China in six years.
The success of Fujian’s tests, including both catapult launches and landing arrests, means that the ship’s commission could be weeks away once it officially enters the People’s Liberation Army Navy (Planning) Fleet.
In the coming months, further recognition is expected in the final test of Fujian’s ability to integrate with the PLA Air Force and rocket forces, which are likely to arrive next spring, Schuster said.
The EMALS system allows carrier aircraft to take off with heavier weapons and fuel loads than those operating two older carriers in China, Shandong and Liaoning.
Analysts say the Fujian ability to fire large fighter jets that carry higher ammunition loads to more distances gives carriers a greater range of combat than their Chinese fleet predecessors, providing the so-called “blue water” capabilities to the plan.
The EMALS system will place Fujian, which is equivalent to the USS Gerald R Ford of the US Navy. This relies on the Nimitz class, the 10 old US Navy airlines, relying on steam-powered catapults to launch aircraft.
Nuclear power gives US carriers the ability to stay at sea as long as crew regulations continue. Fujian is equipped with traditional fuel. This means you have to make a port call or meet a tanker at sea.
As China has increased its navy, it has acted more assertively in regional waters from the Taiwan Strait to the east and southern seas, attracting frequent criticism from the US and regional allies such as Japan and the Philippines.
On Tuesday, US Rep. Adam Smith, a top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, who leads the Beijing delegation, said military ties between the US and China are “special concerns.”
“China is the fastest growing military and the fastest growing nuclear power plant in the world. The United States has the largest military and largest nuclear weapons in the world. It is dangerous to not have regular communication about capabilities and intentions.
“We’ve seen this by boats, planes, ships, planes getting too close to each other. We need to have a better conversation about dismantling those things,” he said.
The rapid development of AI, drones, cyber and space capabilities only exacerbated the risk of misunderstanding, he added.
The bipartisan group arrived in Beijing on Sunday and held a series of meetings with Chinese officials, including Prime Minister Li Qiang, Defense Minister Dong Jun and Deputy Prime Minister He Lifeng, who have been leading trade talks with the US on behalf of China.
At a meeting Monday, Smith told Don that the US wanted to open up its communication lines with China, particularly on military issues.
According to Chinese national media, Don has called on US lawmakers to “eliminate destructive and restrictive factors” and has taken constructive and practical steps to improve US-China military relations.
The trip follows a call between President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Friday, and is the latest in a surge in high levels of engagement between the two countries ahead of a potential summit between leaders.
Following the call, Trump said he will meet XI at the APEC summit in South Korea next month, and will visit China early next year. The leader also agreed to XI to come to the US “at the right time,” Trump said.
