London
–

British Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner resigned after a scandal over failing to pay the correct amount of property taxes, adding to the disaster for the country’s struggling central left government.

Rayner’s departure is another headache for the preferee of Kiel, an increasingly unpopular leader in the UK, taking one of the brightest political stars from his cabinet.

In a letter addressed in order of priority on Friday, Rayner said she has resigned as British deputy prime minister and housing minister and associate leader of the Labour Party.

Despite securing a landslide election victory in July 2024, Labour now faces a growing challenge from the startup anti-immigrant reform UK party, which leads a national poll and holds a national conference in Birmingham on Friday.

Her resignation pushed British Prime Minister Kiel to take on a major re-shuffle of his cabinet later on Friday. According to Downing Street, David Lammy, who served as the UK’s Foreign Minister, has been appointed Attorney General as an alternative to Rayner.

Yvette Cooper, who served as Secretary of the Interior, has played Ramie’s previous role as Foreign Minister, according to Downing Street. Meanwhile, Shabana Mahmood, who previously took on the role of Attorney General, has become the new Secretary of the Interior.

Rayner paid £40,000 in property taxes when purchasing a second home early in the year. She says she was misunderstood.

Raynor was fighting for her political survival after it was revealed that she hadn’t paid enough property taxes for the Hove apartment on the southern coast of England that she bought earlier this year.

Rayner argued that her mistakes were unconscious and based on poor legal advice. However, the opposition and right-wing British tabloids quickly labeled her a hypocrite for her history of assaulting a conservative minister of the previous government over a similar “despicable” incident. Her actions quickly snowballed into a national scandal.

Priorities were initially standing up for his lieutenant, but his support increased anemia every day. With the UK plagued by the housing crisis and labor is considering raising taxes, including property, Raynor’s advocacy has become increasingly difficult. Critics said her position was unacceptable.

In a letter Friday, Rayner wrote that media scrutiny would be “unbearable” to remain in her post, and that “while I had rightly expected proper scrutiny about me and my life, my family did not choose to interrogate and publish my personal life.”

In Rayner’s resignation, the workforce was one of the most talented politicians, whose candid style, working class roots and powerful Northern English accents bridging the division within the Congressional Labour Party.

Raynor grew up poorly outside Manchester and became a mother at the age of 16. Before entering politics, she trained as a caregiver for the elderly and served as a trade union representative. Her simple, extroverted attitude contrasts with her more modest, stand-off priority, a former human rights lawyer.

“It was an honor in my life to serve as the highest level of government for the teenage mother at the Council Real Estate in Stockport,” Rayner wrote Friday. “I always know that politics will change lives because it has changed mine.”

Young Labour voters were used by overly sophisticated and often educated politicians in expensive private schools. She films her dance at Pride March in London and party at a DJ booth in Ibiza. Recently she was vaping while in an inflatable canoe away from the beach in Brighton.

When opposed, Rayner frequently challenged Conservative lawmakers over their actions.

But Rayner’s apartment near that beach has become a flashpoint for the scandal. When Rayner bought the property in nearby Hove for £800,000 (nearly $1.1 million) this May this year, she said she was advised that she didn’t have to pay high taxes (known as stamp duty) at her second home. Instead of paying a higher fee of £70,000 (£94,000), she paid £30,000 ($40,000).

Rayner said she did because she was already selling shares in the Manchester constituency home and had put it into trust for her children. That trust was funded by the Medical Award after her son was born prematurely and left with a lifelong disability.

Given how complicated the UK tax system is, some tax experts have expressed modest sympathy for Rayner.

“Tax systems are disruptive, particularly messy stamp mandates, higher tax rates for additional assets beyond messy,” wrote Dan Nadl, founder of fellow tax policy, in X.

But Neidle admitted that Rayner had made her position even more difficult, given that she often hugged conservative politicians on her own tax basis during the years opposite workers.

In 2018, she accused then Minister Helmy Hunt of using “Tory Tax Theophole” to save stamp duty while purchasing seven apartments. She also called for the resignation of former Prime Minister Nadim Zahawi.

While some analysts have suggested that he may be quietly pleased with the resignation of his main rival and potential successor, Raynor’s fall concludes what was a horrifying summer for labor.

In a letter written to Rayner on Friday, priorities said that his time spent with the government “ends like this” and “very sad.”

“I think you’ve reached the right decision, but it was a decision that you know is very painful for you,” he wrote, adding that she was “a trusted colleague and a true friend for many years.”
