This week, medical tests from former Brazilian president Jia Bolsonaro showed the presence of early skin cancer, doctors said Wednesday.
According to the results of Sunday’s procedure to remove skin lesions, doctors discovered squamous cell carcinoma that begins in cells in the mid and outer layers of the skin.
According to CNN Brasil, Doctor Claudio Biroloni of Bolsonaro said, “Two lesions of squamous cell carcinoma are positive, not the kindest or most aggressive, but they still have skin cancer.
The news comes less than a week after the former president was convicted of planning a coup, and prosecutors say it includes plans to potentially assassinate current President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro, 70, was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison. He is under house arrest and is expected to appeal.
Bolsonaro’s cancer is described as “in situ,” meaning that abnormal cells showed no signs of spread.
A doctor at DF Star Hospital in Brasilia said the diagnosis would require clinical monitoring and regular reevaluation.
Bolsonaro was hospitalized for the second time on Tuesday, prior to vomiting, dizziness, hypotension and Syncop. He was released from hospital Wednesday and continues to be monitored by doctors.
The far-right politician was previously hospitalized for pain related to a wound that persisted when he was stabbed on a campaign trail seven years ago.
Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, Bolsonaro’s eldest son, told X that his father was okay. “My dad has already won by fighting tougher battles. This will not change anything,” he said.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
