Bette Midler reacts to Diane Keaton’s death

For Bette Midler, Diane Keaton will always be her first friend.

Following Keaton’s death at the age of 79, the First Wives Club actress shared a heartfelt tribute to her late co-star.

“The brilliant, beautiful, and extraordinary Diane Keaton has passed away,” Midler wrote on Instagram on October 11. “Words cannot express how unbearably sad this is. She was hilarious, a complete original, and had none of the malice or competitive spirit you would expect from a star like her.”

The 79-year-old added, “You saw who she was… oh la, la la!”

Midler and Keaton famously teamed up on-screen with Goldie Hawn in 1996’s The First Wives Club, about the bond between three divorcees. When the trio won the Women in Film Crystal Award for their performance, Midler called Keaton a “dear friend.”

“In my mind, I think this award came not because our work on The First Wives Club was so great, but because we were all so elated that three actresses of a certain age still had what it takes to make a $100 million movie like these testosterone tyrants,” she said while accepting the award.
