At least 13 killed in Mexican interoceanic train derailment

At least 13 people were killed and 98 injured after a train derailed in Mexico on Sunday, the Mexican Navy said. There were 250 people on board.

The derailment occurred on the main train line between Veracruz and Salinacruz in Asunción Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca state.

The Navy said in a statement that 36 people required hospital treatment and the rest had minor injuries. It said hundreds of naval personnel and rescue vehicles were dispatched to the scene.

Mexico’s Attorney General Ernestina Godoy said in a post on X that an investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the derailment.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also addressed the incident, writing to X that she has instructed the Navy Secretary and the Undersecretary of Human Rights at the Interior Ministry to “go to the scene and deal directly with the families.”

Managed by the Mexican Navy, the Interoceanic Railway connects Mexico’s Pacific and Gulf coasts. The trunk line finally opened in 2023 under a new plan by then-Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, aimed at boosting economic development in southern Mexico and creating an alternative cargo transport option to the Panama Canal.

This is a developing story.
