Australia’s Defense Minister Richard Marles said on Sunday that the US could use Western Australia’s planned defense facilities to deliver submarines under the Aux nuclear submarine deal.
The government said on Saturday that it would spend $12 billion ($8 billion) on upgrading the Henderson Shipyard facility near Perth.
The Orcas Agreement, agreed in 2021 by Australia, the UK and the US, aims to provide Australia with nuclear-powered attack submarines for the next decade to counter China’s ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region. President Donald Trump’s administration has made a formal review of the agreement.
When asked on Sunday if the US could use dry docks at its facilities for nuclear-powered submarines, Marls said, “I would expect that because this is a bull facility.”
“This is something that can be maintained and maintained for Australia’s future submarines, but it is a facility being built in the Orcas context,” he told Australian Broadcasting Co., Ltd. Television. “I think this will be available in the US in the future.”
The labor governments on the left and right of the center made an initial investment of $127 million last year to upgrade the shipyard facilities. This will also build new landing vessels for the Australian Army and new general purpose frigates for the Navy, helping to hire around 10,000 local people.
Under Orcas – worth tens of billions of dollars – Washington will sell several nuclear submarines of the Virginia class to Australia, but the UK and Australia will later build new luxury-class submarines.
Republicans and Democrats of the US Congressional Committee for Strategic Competition with China in July highlighted strong support for Orcas in a review of the deal with pentagonal policymaker and agreement civil servant Elbridge Colby.
Australia claims that it is confident that Australia, which has signed a treaty with the UK to strengthen cooperation over the next 50 years, will move forward.
