What we know about the synagogue attacks in Manchester, England

LONDON (AP) – British police say two people have died and three others have been seriously injured on Thursday Attacker drove the car to people outside the synagogue It stabbed the public in Manchester, northwest England.

Initial response

Police said they called to the synagogue of Heaton Park Hebrew Congress in Crumpsole, a northern Manchester suburb, and after 9:30am he saw a car driven by a member of the masses and saw the man stabbed. Police praised the witnesses for their “quick response” and the “courage” of the security guards and the people within the synagogue to prevent suspects from entering the synagogue.

Victims

Police confirmed that two people were killed and four others were seriously injured in the attack. Greater Manchester police confirmed that the two deceased were “members of our Jewish community,” but their identity is unknown.

Suspect

Police said an unidentified suspect was killed after a firearms officer was shot dead just seven minutes after being called into the case at the synagogue. Police said they believe they know his identity, but believe it is “premature” to name him now.

Police have not previously confirmed his death due to “safety issues” related to “suspected items of his person” which had the appearance of the explosive device. The bomb disposal unit was sent to the site. It’s not clear what the bomb disposal unit found in the suspect. Police said the loud noise heard at the scene was linked to officers entering the suspect’s vehicle as a precaution.

Police also said two other people were arrested in connection with the attack.

Terrorist acts

Approximately six hours after the incident, London’s metropolitan police, leading counterterrorism businesses across the UK, confirmed that the incident was being treated as a terrorist attack. Deputy Director Lawrence Taylor said police across the country are stepping up patrols at synagogues and other Jewish sites.

Motive unknown

Government response

British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer said he was eager to attack and additional police officers would be deployed at synagogues across the UK.

Reactions of the Jewish Community

The news that the synagogue was targeted throughout the Jewish community was shocked. The Israeli Embassy in London condemned the incident, describing it as “abhorrent and deeply painful.” The attack was branded as “a horrifying attack on the sacred day of the Jewish year” by the Community Security Trust, which monitors British anti-Semitism.

The King’s Shock

King Charles III said he and his wife, Queen Camilla, were “deeply shocked and saddened on a terrible attack in Manchester, especially on a very important day for the Jewish community.” He said, “Their thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated by the emergency services for the prompt action, along with all those affected by this horrific incident.”

Ascending Anti-Semitism

According to the Community Security Trust, Britain has traditionally been a safe area for Jews, but the British anti-Semitism incident has skyrocketed following Hamas’ attacks on Israel and Israel’s ongoing military campaigns. Over 1,500 incidents were reported in the first half. This is reported to be the second highest since the previous year’s record was set.
