California has just made history as the first state to demand transparency in AI safety from the industry’s largest labs. Governor Newsom signed the law to SB 53 this week, requiring AI giants like Openai and humanity to disclose and stick to safety protocols. The decision has already sparked debate over whether other states will follow suit.

Adam Billen, Vice President of Public Policy at ENCODE AI, has joined in fairness to break what this new law actually means and why it was successful.

Listen and listen to the entire episode:

What “responsible transparency” actually means, and whether it is enough to ensure that safe AI is released to the public. Whistleblower protection and critical safety incident reporting requirements. There are still things that are available on Newsom’s desks, such as restrictions on AI companion chatbots. Why the SB 53 is an example of a light touch state policy that does not interfere with AI progress. The fight for federalism is a fight in the movement that strips states of their rights to enact AI regulations.
