LONDON (AP) – The UK is expected to recognize Palestine later on Sunday despite opposition from the US.
While the expected moves are largely symbolic, the UK hopes to raise diplomatic pressure on ending the Gaza conflict and help pave the way for long-term peace.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lamey, who was the Secretary of Foreign Affairs until earlier this month, said the announcement of the Palestinian approval would come from Prime Minister Kiel Starmer later on Sunday.
“The decision to recognize a Palestinian state will not occur overnight if made later today,” he told Sky News.
