How AI Startups are Fueling Google’s Vibrant Cloud Business

Google Cloud announced Thursday that it has added Lovable and Windsurf, a rapidly rising AI coding startup to its customer roster. The companies have chosen Google Cloud as their leading cloud computing provider. This is the latest indication that Google is standing out against its massive rivals AWS and Microsoft Azure.

The transaction also highlights Google’s efforts to make the cloud business a centre of the company’s future.

Today, Google Cloud is covered in large competitors such as AWS and Microsoft, as well as Google’s much larger advertising business. But it sees upward momentum.

Google Cloud is one of the company’s fastest growing business lines. Google said the cloud division reached a run rate of $50 billion a year in its last revenue call, while cloud chief Thomastrian said this week that the unit has generated $58 billion in new revenue over the next two years. Google generated $43.2 billion in cloud services in 2024 and $33.1 billion in 2023.

Winning contracts with major AI startups seems to be a massive driver of Google Cloud’s growth. The department says it will work in nine of the 10 major AI labs including Safe Emergency and Openai and nine of nine major AI labs including 60% of the world’s generative AI startups. Last year, the company said it saw a 20% increase in the number of new AI startups choosing Google Cloud.

Recently acquired by recognition, Lovable and Windsurf spend relatively fewer than big AI labs and large companies, but bets are going to be big companies in the future and worth investing.

Google says that two atmosphere coding startups will use Gemini 2.5 Pro to power their products. This also runs on Google Cloud infrastructure. Google says Windsurf also uses the Gemini model to integrate with Cognition’s AI agent Devin.

The significant cloud costs of training, tweaking and running AI models have presented major challenges for AI model developers, including Google Deepmind with Gemini models. But that was a boon for the cloud business. According to market intelligence and analytics firm Synergy Research, the global cloud market is expected to exceed $400 billion in 2025, with a 20% growth rate over the next five years.

The company held its first Google AI Builder’s Forum on Thursday, bringing together hundreds of AI startup founders, unveiling more than 40 new AI startup buildings on Google Cloud. In addition to Lovable and Windsurf, Krea AI, backed by Sequoia-supported Factory AI and Andreessen Horowitz, was one of the customers named.

Part of the reason so many AI startups work at Google Cloud is the generous deals it offers. Many AI startups have started Starting with the Google for Startups Cloud Program. This cloud credit offers $350,000. Google Cloud also offers a dedicated cluster of NVIDIA GPUs for startups with the Y Combinator Accelerator program.
