Huawei announces new AI infrastructure once Nvidia is locked out of China

Tech Giant Huawei has announced a new AI infrastructure to boost computing power and enable the company to compete better with rival Chipmaker Nvidia.

In his keynote speech at the Huawei Connect Conference on Thursday, China-based Huawei-based Shin Shenzhen has added more computing with the launch of the new SuperPod Interconnect Technology, which can link up to 15,000 graphics cards, including Huawei’s Ascend AI chip.

The technology appears to be a competitor of NVIDIA’s NVLink infrastructure, which promotes high-speed communication between AI chips.

Such technologies are important for Huawei to compete better with semiconductors like Nvidia. Huawei’s AI chips are less powerful than Nvidia’s AI chips, but being able to put them together gives you access to the more computing power needed to train and scale your AI systems.

The news comes a day after China banned domestic tech companies from purchasing Nvidia hardware, including Nvidia’s RTX Pro 600D servers designed for the Chinese market.

TechCrunch contacted Huawei for more details.
