New York City Mayor Eric Adams looked at a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on March 5, 2025, to investigate the jurisdiction of the “sanctuary city” in Capitol Hill, Washington, DC.

New York Mayor Eric Adams said he will remain in the mayoral race on Friday after the New York Times reported that President Donald Trump’s advisor is working on a plan to have him waive the campaign by being appointed as Saudi Arabian ambassador.
“I’m running for reelection and I’m going to tell New Yorkers every day that I should be Mayor of New York City in 2026,” a recent poll shows that I’m struggling to break the single digits in virtually four-way races.
Trump hopes two candidates will be dropped to make it easier for one challenger to defeat Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Trump on Friday suggested that New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (a Democrat running as an independent) is most likely to beat the democratic socialist mamdani in a true-to-head contest.
Adams angered and disputed the idea in a statement to a reporter outside the Gracie Mansion Residence on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
“New Yorker, I want to talk to you directly. Even though I have said it over and over again, there have been a lot of speculation, communication and announcements about what I’m doing,” Adams said.
“So I want to be clear with you. Andrew Cuomo is a snake and a liar,” Adams said.
“I’m in this race. I’m the only person who can beat Mamdani. Andrew had a career that pushed black candidates out of the race,” said the Democrat mayor, who runs an independent.
“I committed myself and dedicated myself to the city I love. I’ll continue to do that. This polo shirt I’m wearing is Eric Adams, mayor of New York City,” he said. “I’m going to wear it for another four years. We can’t back down.”
“I’m running for reelection,” Adams said. “I’m going to beat the mum ticks.”
He left the reporter without answering the question.
“I’d say if Cuomo were 1-1, there might be a chance they could win.”
“If it wasn’t one-on-one, it would be a hard race,” Trump said.
“If you have multiple candidates, I think we have a Communist mayor in New York,” the president said.
Facing a decline in public recognition ratings, Adams decided not to seek a Democrat nomination after being criminally charged with federal corruption.
The criminal case was removed in April at the request of the Trump administration.
Mamdani defeated Cuomo at his hands in the Democratic primary.
Republican candidate Curtis Swawa has said he will remain in the race.
