Emma Stone’s big move in her “Crazy, Stupid, Love” audition was to play it cool.
In fact, the film’s directors, Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, chose the Bugonia star to play Ryan Gosling’s love interest because Stone was not swayed by Gosling’s aura during her audition.
“Emma comes in and Ryan says a line and he gaffes the line. He was reading with her off-screen, and Emma didn’t miss a beat and was like, ‘Oh, you’re killing this. You’re doing great,'” Ficarra told People in an interview published July 29.
After the 37-year-old, who was in her early 20s at the time, quickly hit it off with the Notebook enthusiasts, the director’s team (also the team behind Whiskey Tango Foxtrot) were “desperate to work with her.”
“We spent all day with Ryan doing readings for the actresses, and a lot of them were really good,” Ficarra admitted. “But when Ryan entered the room, they got a little upset,” even though the Oscar nominee was “just being himself.”
