Bot detection startup Spur wins $200 million from Insight

Lake Mary, Florida-based cybersecurity startup Spur Intelligence has raised $200 million in a round led by Insight Partners.

Founded by two former Department of Defense engineers in 2017, five years before ChatGPT became publicly available, Spur was a visionary. The startup’s technology helps companies distinguish legitimate human users from increasingly hidden bot traffic and identify fake users and threats.

“With the proliferation of sophisticated criminal VPNs, residential proxy networks, and anonymization infrastructure, organizations are operating with an increasingly significant blind spot: they can see the activity, but not the infrastructure behind it,” Insight’s Thomas Crane said in a written statement.

Of course, detecting malicious traffic is a hill that enterprise security teams have climbed for years. But nothing can match the onslaught they face today. As of mid-2026, bots will be more active on the internet than humans, Cloudflare reported last month.

“We thought it would be late 2027, early 2027, but agent traffic has grown so rapidly that bots have overtaken human traffic online for the first time in the history of the internet,” Cloudflare founder and CEO Matthew Prince wrote on X last month, pointing to his company’s latest traffic report.
