Courtney, a longtime history professor at Lower Columbia University in Washington, made her first appearance on Jeopardy! The following month, Maya gave a heartbreaking update, writing that her mother was “not responding to the radiation and chemotherapy the way we expected.”

As Maya noted, Courtney decided to make the “brave and clear-headed decision to stop treatment and move to hospice,” and her daughter emphasized that her family was “behind” her decision.
