Toronto police investigate after shooting and vandalism hits Jewish-owned bakery chain

Two Jewish-owned bagel shops in Toronto were damaged in Sunday’s attack, which is currently being investigated by the Toronto Police Hate Crimes Unit.

Two stores of Kiba’s, a bakery specializing in bagels, were attacked in the morning, and the windows of one store were damaged by gunfire, police announced in a post on X. A second store in the city also had windows damaged, but investigators found no evidence of gunfire there.

Police said, “Currently, investigative authorities are investigating whether the incidents are related and are working to identify the culprit.” “No injuries were reported.”

CNN has reached out to Kiva’s for comment on the attack.

“We understand that this is a concern for those who work and live in this area, particularly members of the Jewish community. We have every resource available to us to thoroughly investigate this matter,” Lt. Scott Bradbury told reporters Sunday, according to footage from CNN reporting partner CTV.

The attacks on the two bakeries come nearly a month after a mass shooting in Montreal raised concerns about Canada’s Jewish community. Last month in Montreal, a gunman whose writings authorities say promoted anti-Semitic, misogynistic and anti-capitalist violence opened fire, killing a police officer and two Israeli nationals who were described as beloved members of Montreal’s Jewish community. After a gunfight, the gunman died.

In early June, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a speech at a Toronto synagogue that the country was “disqualifying” Jewish Canadians and promised to invest tens of millions of dollars in security for houses of worship.

Carney said more than two-thirds of religiously motivated hate crimes last year were directed at Jewish Canadians, with anti-Semites in Canada shooting up Jewish schools, attacking community centers and targeting Jewish-owned businesses.

Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, 2023, anti-Semitic incidents have increased rapidly around the world.

CNN’s Alaa Elassar contributed to this report.
