Winfrey sang the iconic line that fans will never forget, “I think I’ll keep running,” to which Palmer cheered and jokingly added, “You gotta give them a little slave anthem every once in a while.”
After the two laughed, the 72-year-old explained why the song wasn’t a hit. As it turned out, “Run On” was only featured on one season of Winfrey’s 25-season talk show.
“Even though I was taking singing lessons, I realized I couldn’t sing,” she told Ms. Palmer.
While the One of Them Day actress insisted the song was “not bad,” Winfrey playfully retorted, “You know it’s bad. You’re just saying that because you’re looking at me. It was pretty bad.”
The TV personality added that he had a church choir participate in the recording as backup vocals to make the recording better, but “it just didn’t work out.”
Winfrey may not have been a fan of “Run On,” but its legend lives on among many fans, including the late Whitney Houston, who was known as a huge fan of the theme song. She made headlines in 1999 when she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and began singing “Run On” in response to Winfrey’s question about her “favorite” song.
