Bret Michaels spoke at length about the thorns that stuck out from his rosy career.
In a June 2025 Instagram post, the Poison frontman explained how living with type 1 diabetes could impact his touring schedule following the health scare.
“Unfortunately, living with diabetes since I was 6 years old has had its ups and downs and can be really hard at times,” Michaels wrote. “Last night I went on stage and added a song or two to my set to prove to myself and my fans that I could do it. My blood sugar level when I got off stage at the end was a real-life 39 degrees.”
According to the CDC, hypoglycemia in T1D patients is considered 70 mg/dL, with severe hypoglycemia starting at 54 mg/dL.
“I promise to take the time I need in the near future,” he told fans. “And please bear with us if we have to change some shows until this situation is over.
That’s not to say Michaels hasn’t taken adequate precautions during his decades-long career.
Michaels told People magazine in 2024. “When you wake up, the first thing you do is check your blood sugar monitor. You get your shot, and the next thing you do is get up. Whether you’re feeling good, bad, or indifferent, getting into the habit of working out will help even out your blood sugar levels.”
He added, “And I try to dive into the fun and work of the day and spend each day that way.”
