Liverpool are in talks with Anglo-Indian investor Amit Bhatia over a potential deal for a minority stake in the Premier League football club.
Liverpool’s US-based owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) confirmed the approach from Mr Bhatia’s group on Tuesday.
“An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” an FSG spokesperson told AFP.
Mr Bhatia, the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, heads a consortium interested in buying the 20-time English champions.
The Financial Times reported that Mr Bhatia had hired advisers to work on the offer, which the paper said could value Liverpool at more than $6 billion.
Just hours after Bhatia’s interest in Liverpool emerged, the London-born 46-year-old has resigned as manager and co-owner of Queens Park Rangers (QPR) in the English Championship.
Bhatia, who spent 18 seasons with the West Londoners, is set to transfer ownership of the club to majority owner Ruben Nanalingam.
“I step back from my formal responsibilities with pride, gratitude and love. I would like to thank the players, managers, staff, community trust, fellow executives and above all the fans who have made me and my family feel part of the QPR family over the years,” said Bhatia.
Talks between Bhatia and FSG, which bought Liverpool for 300 million pounds sterling ($400 million) in 2010, are believed to be at an early stage and no deal has yet been reached.
Bhatia’s investment will be made to help Liverpool become even more successful, following FSG’s move to sell a minority stake in the club to global sports investment firm Dynasty in 2023.
Reports at the time valued the deal at between $100 million and $200 million.
