Other Broadway veterans and newcomers nominated at this year’s ceremony include Nicholas Christopher and Hannah Crews for Chess, Sam Tutti and Christiani Pitts for Two Strangers, Joshua Henry and Casey Levy for Ragtime, Shoshana Bean for The Lost Boys and Andre De Shields for Cats: The Jellicle Ball.
Meanwhile, “The Lost Boys,” “Schmigadoon!,” “Titanic,” and “Two Strangers” are destined to compete for Best Musical, while “Little Bear Ridge Road,” “Revelation,” “Giant,” and “The Bastards” are up for Best Picture.
The first award of the night, presented by Cole Escola and Maya Rudolph, went to Lithgow, who won Best Actor in a Play for his role as author Roald Dahl in Giant.
“I’m a really lucky actor,” Lithgow, 80, said in his acceptance speech. “This is my third Tony Award. The first was 53 years ago. (It’s) my Broadway debut in the American premiere of a British play that, like Giant, started at the Court Theater in London. It’s an amazing coincidence.”
