The reigning European champions boast perhaps the best collection of Spanish talent since the golden generation of 2008 and 2012, which swept them all before them, and arguably go into the 2026 World Cup as the team to beat.

This potentially new golden generation is even younger and arguably has more depth than the previous generation, with Spain instilling a faster, more direct style from the heyday of tiki-taka under the steady guidance of coach Luis de la Fuente.

However, Spain has weaknesses and is under huge pressure to deliver, especially after several failures at the recent World Cup.

Incredibly, La Roja have not been able to advance beyond the last 16 of a World Cup since their only victory in 2010.

The deciding question ahead of this tournament will be whether they can use their talent to win football’s top prize for the second time.

Spain’s main players

Their perfect run to the 2024 Euro Trophy saw them defeat England, France and hosts Germany, proving they are far ahead of Europe’s elite.

Spain are currently unbeaten in 28 games in regular time since March 2024, but there is a slight blemish on that record after losing on penalties to Portugal in the 2025 Nations League final.

Barcelona’s star right winger Lamine Yamal made his breakthrough at Euro 2024 at the age of 16, registering four assists and scoring one of the tournament’s goals, and has continued to develop since then to become one of the most exciting young players in the world.

This season, Yamal lit up La Liga and the Champions League with his performances, scoring 16 goals and 11 assists in the league, and 5 goals and 4 assists in Europe.

But he’s only human. Yamal is still very young, not turning 19 until a few days before the final, but he has felt pressured and frustrated at times this season, lashing out when things don’t go his way.

He also comes into this tournament after a long season in which he was plagued by several injuries, including missing the final stages of the season with a hamstring problem, but he should be fine to play in Spain’s opening match. Therefore, for La Roja to thrive, it must protect its prize assets.

Real Madrid has fewer players, Barcelona has the upper hand

Ramal is one of eight players from the Catalan club in the team, but Spain will be playing the World Cup without Real Madrid players for the first time, with the likes of Dean Huisen and Dani Carvajal unavailable.

De la Fuente downplayed the absence of Madrid players.

“I’m a coach and I don’t care about where the players come from. They’re national team players, I don’t look at which club they belong to. I don’t have the same local bias that fans have. All I want is for the players to be proud to represent the national team,” de la Fuente told reporters.

“The key word is excitement. Passion,” he added.

“The reaction was from people all over Spain, adults and children alike, showing their full support for the national team.”

Rodri remains the center of a strong midfield

Manchester City and Spain’s Ballon d’Or winner Rodri tends to be the heart of the team, a key stabilizing presence linking defense and attack.

However, since injuring his anterior cruciate ligament in September 2024, he has not been as strong as before and has often struggled with form and fitness since then. He seems to have concerns at City this season, and although his contract ends this summer, there are rumors that he could move to Real Madrid.

De la Fuente’s replacements, such as Arsenal’s Martin Zvimenti, have never looked like they have command, so the Spanish manager will want the talismanic Rodri to stay fit and focused for the long eight-game tournament if he reaches the final.

Other fitness concerns

Pedri and Fabian Ruiz are likely to complete the midfield alongside Rodri, with the likes of Mikel Merino and Dani Olmo providing back-up if they are suitable. Pedri, in particular, seems to have returned to his brilliant best form with Barça this season after a long injury absence.

But Rodri’s fitness is not Spain’s only fitness problem. Merino, who was Spain’s top scorer in qualifying, underwent surgery for a stress fracture in his right foot in February, and there is a possibility that he will not recover in time for the tournament.

Fabian Ruiz returned from a knee injury, while Nico Williams appeared to have overcome a hamstring injury in time for the opening game.

Difference with Spain’s 9th place

In the tiki-taka era after David Villa and Raul, Spain’s lack of elite specialist centre-forwards was less of a problem. Euro 2024 was no problem, with striker Alvaro Morata lifting the trophy as captain, but producing little on the pitch.

That doesn’t mean it can’t be a weakness. Even if Yamal and Nico Williams are unable to run rampant on the wings due to injury or a dip in form, missing a world-class centre-forward will dampen the threat somewhat.

Real Sociedad’s Mikel Oyarzabal may be the player best suited to wear the No. 9 shirt, having scored an impressive 15 goals in La Liga so far this season, but there is a sense that he is not yet world-class.

De la Fuente could also turn to Ferran Torres, who scored 16 La Liga goals for Barça in 2025/26, but he is also unproven and inconsistent on the biggest stage.

What about Spanish groups?

La Roja will start in what should be the easiest game in Group H, as they will face small country Cape Verde, who are ranked 69th in the world and playing in their first World Cup.

Saudi Arabia could cause an upset (see Argentina’s defeat in Qatar), but they will likely be overwhelmed by Spain’s quality and power.

Uruguay will pose the toughest test and Spain will have to face them in the unrelenting heat of Guadalajara, Mexico.

Uruguayans have always been physically fit and dedicated. Manager Marcel Bielsa will give them more unpredictability and tactical flair to take advantage of the talents of Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde, Barça’s Ronald Araujo and the clumsy and volatile Darwin Nunez. However, there should still be too much talent in Spain for Bielsa’s team.

Champions.

Spain has the most prolific starting XI in the world and a new golden generation is on the rise, young, hungry and already used to winning. If their star players hit their stride, La Roja will be very difficult to stop.
